Frankenstorm hits the east coast

The Eastern Seaboard braced Monday for the full impact of Hurricane Sandy as it barreled toward shore packing 85-mph winds and an 11-foot storm surge that forecasters called “life-threatening.”

“It’s a very intense, very dangerous storm. People will die in this storm,” Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley said Monday. “So folks will need to mind their families, stay home and hunker down.”

The 900-mile wide storm’s front edge sent tide-enhanced surges over boardwalks from Delaware to New York a full 12 hours before Sandy’s eye was to make landfall. Widespread evacuations along the coast were ordered, mass transit was shut down in major metropolitan areas and some 60 million people live in the path of the mega-storm and many likely face power outages in the coming hours and days.

The National Guard was deployed along the densely-populated Atlantic coast, and airports were expected to shut down by Monday afternoon as the weather system experts are calling “Frankenstorm” churned in from the sea. The hurricane is on a collision course with a winter storm and a cold front, and high tides from a full moon make it a rare hybrid storm that could be felt all the way to the Great Lakes.

“[It’s a] very intense, very dangerous storm. People will die in this storm,” Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley said Monday. “So folks will need to mind their families, stay home and hunker down.”

Even homes on stilts were threatened by the massive surge, and water was cresting dunes and boardwalks from Delaware’s Rehoboth Beach to Jones Beach in New York.

Forecasters warned that the New York City region could face the worst of the hurricane. As of 9 a.m. Monday, the storm was centered about 300 miles southeast of New York City, moving to the north at 14 mph, with hurricane-force winds extending an incredible 175 miles from its center. The National Hurricane Center said early Monday the storm has intensified, with top sustained winds of 85 mph and higher gusts. Sandy has already been blamed for 65 deaths in the Caribbean before it began traveling northward, parallel to the Eastern Seaboard.

“The worst is still coming,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said during a morning press conference.

States of emergency were declared from North Carolina, where gusty winds whipped steady rain on Sunday, to Connecticut. Delaware ordered mandatory evacuations for coastal communities on Sunday, while Ocean City, Md. was also evacuated.

Authorities warned that New York City could be hit with an 11-foot wall of water that has the potential to swamp parts of lower Manhattan, flood subway tunnels and cripple the network of electrical and communications lines that are vital to the nation’s financial center.

Tens of thousands of people were ordered to evacuate in anticipation of the storm, including 375,000 in lower Manhattan and other parts of New York City. At least 50,000 were ordered to evacuate in Delaware alone and 30,000 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where the city’s 12 casinos were forced to shut down for only the fourth time in the 34-year history of legalized gambling there.

Airlines canceled more than 7,200 flights and Amtrak began suspending passenger train service across the Northeast. New York and Philadelphia shut down their subways, buses and commuter trains Sunday night and announced that schools would be closed on Monday. Boston, Washington and Baltimore also called off school. In Washington and New Jersey, Metrorail and PATH train services were canceled.

“The time for preparing and talking is about over,” Federal Emergency Management Administrator Craig Fugate said as Hurricane Sandy made its way up the Atlantic on a collision course with two other weather systems that could turn it into one of the most fearsome storms on record in the U.S. “People need to be acting now.”

Forecasters said the hurricane could blow ashore Monday night or early Tuesday along the New Jersey coast, then cut across into Pennsylvania and travel up through New York State on Wednesday.

“We’re looking at impact of greater than 50 to 60 million people,” said Louis Uccellini, head of environmental prediction for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

In upstate New York in Syracuse, shelves normally stocked with water at a Wegmans store were bare on Sunday, CNYCentral.com reports.

An assistant manager at a Lowes store in Columbus, Ohio, told 10TV.com that people were calling in from West Virginia and Maryland to ask for supplies, and in northern Virginia, a cashier at Pitkins Ace Hardware in Dale City said batteries, flashlights and candles were flying off the shelves, PotomacLocal.com reports.

The storm even put Lady Liberty on hold.

The Statue of Liberty was scheduled to reopen Sunday to the public after a renovation project, but the monument will be closed Monday and Tuesday as Sandy passes through the area.

The danger of the storm is hardly limited to coastal areas. Forecasters were far more worried about inland flooding from storm surge than they were about winds. Rains could saturate the ground, causing trees to topple into power lines, utility officials said, warning residents to prepare for several days at home without power.

In North Carolina’s Outer Banks, there was some scattered, minor flooding Sunday on the beach road in Nags Head.

The Virginia National Guard was also authorized to call up to 500 troops to active duty for debris removal and road-clearing, while homeowners stacked sandbags at their front doors in coastal towns.

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management says federal offices will be closed Monday and only emergency employees are required to report to work. Non-emergency employees will be granted administrative leave for their scheduled working hours unless they are required to telework or are traveling or on unpaid leave.

President Obama said the storm is “serious and big” and will be “slow moving,” while he was at the headquarters of the Federal Emergency Management Agency to get an update on plans for responding to Hurricane Sandy.

The White House said in a news release that the president on Sunday signed the state of emergency declaration, which had been requested by Mayor Vincent Gray. It says federal aid should supplement the city’s response efforts due to the emergency conditions.

The move follows the federal government’s decision to close offices on Monday. The district’s board of elections also announced it was suspending early voting on Monday. It has not been determined whether here will be early voting on Tuesday.

Obama nixed his participation in a campaign rally in Orlando on Monday and flew back to Washington to monitor the storm. The president has instructed his team to make sure that needed federal resources are in place to support state and local recovery efforts. source – FoxNews

The East Plano Islamic Center in north Texas wants to create an exclusive Muslim enclave called ‘Epic City’ on 400 acre tract of unincorporated land in Collin County

There are dumb ideas, bad ideas, and ideas so incomprehensible they beggar description, Epic City is one of those ideas that ought never to come to pass. Now we know that not all Muslims are terrorists, but ten percent of them are. We know that there are many fine, upstanding and patriotic Muslim Americans who love this country and would fight to defend it. We also know that we live in the age of global Islamic terrorism, and building a all-Muslim supercity in the beating heart of Texas is an idea that should be shot down the first time it’s brought to light.

Residents in Collin County, Texas, spent over half the day debating the merits of the proposed and so-called Epic City, and as much as I would like to think the idea was roundly rejected, I don’t think it was. Ever see those videos where hundreds of rug-carrying Muslims have descended on a busy downtown street, and with police protection, they are somehow allowed to stop all traffic while they pray to their god? Ever ask yourself how could that happen, and could that happen in my town? The answer is simple. America is a nation built on Christian principles, and while we have freedom of religion which is a good thing, a 400 acre Muslim Epic City is not. To quote DL Moody, “no, NO, a thousand times no!” to the plans for Epic City. Epic City would become it’s own town, and would govern itself according to Sharia Law. Remember the Alamo, that’s the memo.

Community divided over proposed Muslim-focused EPIC City in Collin County amid state investigations

FROM CBS NEWS TEXAS: Dozens of North Texas residents are speaking out about a proposed community catering to Muslims in an unincorporated part of Collin County near Josephine after several state investigations were recently launched into the project and the mosque it is tied to – The East Plano Islamic Center.

A four-and-a-half-hour meeting at Collin County Commissioner Court Monday gave residents their first chance to share their comments on EPIC City, the proposed Muslim-focused community that includes a thousand homes, a mosque, a community college and more spanning 400 acres about 40 miles northeast of Dallas.

“We all want safe, inclusive communities that require transparency, accountability, and respect for the rule of law. EPIC City fails on all three,” one speaker said.

“To allow a new group to claim and execute a 400-acre segregated city is the height of insanity,” another speaker said.

“These individuals deserve treatment and real representation. We must advocate for an inclusive Texas,” said Collin County resident, Dylan Evans, supporting the project.

Monday’s meeting comes after the state launched five investigations into EPIC City, as well as East Plano Islamic Center and investment group Community Capital Partners, which is heading the project.

Attorney General Ken Paxton is investigating CCP for potential consumer protection violations. In a news release, Paxton said the development raised several concerns.

“Under my watch, there will be zero tolerance for any person or entity that breaks Texas law,” Paxton said.

On Monday, Gov. Greg Abbott announced the latest investigation into EPIC City, saying in a statement he has directed the Texas Rangers to investigate EPIC and any affiliated entities for “potential criminal activities.”

“I think this is just adding more fuel to the fire. And, you know, I’m not happy about that,” said Texas State Rep. Salman Bhojani, D-District 92.

Bhojani is the first Muslim elected official in Texas history and said the attack on the project is a violation of religious freedom.

“I’m here to fight for every Texan’s right to religious freedom,” Bhojani said. “I’m also a real estate attorney. I know a lot of developments in North Texas that exactly mimic [EPIC City]. So, there’s nothing illegal about that. This is something that we should be protecting in the state of Texas, not demonizing it. Also, I think this is going to really increase the property value around Josephine.”

EPIC public relations representative Erin Ragsdale told county leaders that the plan is open to everyone and will comply with local, state, and federal laws.

“The idea for EPIC City came from the idea of building a master plan neighborhood that would be for all generations,” Ragsdale said. “Their vision is to build an inclusive community for everyone. I don’t think that we would be here today at this early stage if there were plans to float around for a master-planned community with a place of worship that was Christian.”

Commissioners shared their concerns in lieu of the active investigations, making the future of the project even more uncertain.

“This is not building a place of worship or attending a place of worship, it’s about the vision of building a housing development that would limit access and control housing opportunities,” said Collin County Judge Chris Hill. READ MORE

Germany has launched its first deployment abroad since World War II, saying troops will be sent to eastern Lithuania on Russian border, which is NATO’s eastern flank.

We have been telling you for some time now that World War 3 is coming at us rapidly, and that when it does, Germany will once again be front and center just as they were in the previous two wars. Since then, we have watched Germany begin to rearm themselves to an astonishing degree, something they have not done since WWII, and now we are watching them deploy a permanent troop presence on foreign soil, also something we have not seen since WWII. That deployment just happens to be in eastern Lithuania on the Russian border, what an amazing coincidence.

Operation Barbarossa was the code name for Nazi Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union, launched on June 22, 1941, aiming to conquer the western Soviet Union and establish German dominance in Eastern Europe. Operation Barbarossa was a spectacular failure and sounded the death knell for Nazi power and control in Europe, representing ‘strike 2’ in Germany’s plan to control the continent, WWI being the first strike. Germany launches first permanent foreign deployment since WWII – and it’s on Putin’s doorstep

FROM THE MIRROR UK: Brigadier General Christoph Huber, commander of the brigade, explained: “We have a clear mission. We have to ensure the protection, freedom and security of our Lithuanian allies here on NATO’s eastern flank.” The unit is to be fully operational by 2027. It will be the first time German troops have been serving abroad permanently since the Second World War.

The newly created 45th Armored Brigade will contain 5,000 servicemen and women and be stationed in the east of the country. The brigade was activated during a ceremony outside the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius. A temporary headquarters has been established, and the unit is under the command of Brigadier General Huber. The official headquarters in Rūdninkai is expected to be up and running by 2027.

Germany officially launched its first permanent foreign troop deployment since World War II on Tuesday — a 5,000-strong armored brigade in Lithuania — as Berlin moves to bolster NATO’s eastern flank in response to Russia’s war against Ukraine. The brigade is made up of frontline infantry, and support units – including a medical centre, signal company and command support teams.

Plans for the deployment were initially reported back in 2023. It was a major break from Germany’s defence policy, which has prevented the permanent deployment of troops abroad since the end of WWII. READ MORE

The financial times reported that new German army barracks are being built near the Belarus border. The base is expected to house approximately four thousand Bundeswehr soldiers by 2027. This significant construction project is part of Germany’s strategic response to regional security issues. In 2025, those troops are arriving daily, with the transfer complete by 2027.

Trump thought he had formed an alliance with Russia to end the war in Ukraine, and Putin just showed him how very wrong he was.

I am a three-time Trump voter, but this time around I have been fairly hard on him for what, to me, seems to be an impetuous recklessness in his policy and decision-making choices. One thing that I absolutely did not like was the public dressing down of Zelensky at the White House in February while simultaneously taking Russia’s side and supporting Putin. It made Trump and Vance appear petty and vindictive, and at the time it happened, I told you Putin was smiling from ear to ear about it. Now the hastily-formed alliance between Trump and Putin has collapsed as we told you it would, and Trump is left with the proverbial egg on his face. Now what? That’s the memo.
