Remembering the day that America forever changed

written by Peggy Noonan

People are discussing the geopolitical implications of 9/11 and how the tragedy changed our country, and most of what’s been said has been worthy and serious. But my thoughts, as we hit the 10th anniversary, are more local and particular. I’m in a New York state of mind.

There were two targets, Washington and New York. Washington saw a great military institution attacked, and quickly rebuilt. In Washington people ran barefoot from the White House and the Capitol. But New York saw a world end. New York saw the buildings come down.

That was the thing. It’s not that the towers were hit—we could have taken that. It’s not the fire, we could have taken that too. They bombed the World Trade Center in 1993 and took out five floors, and the next day we were back in business.

It’s that the buildings came down, in front of our eyes. They were there and proud and strong, they were massive, two pillars at the end of the island. And then they groaned to the ground and there was a cloud and when people could finally see they looked back and the buildings weren’t there breaking through the clouds anymore. The buildings were a cloud. The buildings were gone and that was too much to bear because they couldn’t be gone, they couldn’t have fallen. Because no one could knock down those buildings.

And it changed everything. It marked a psychic shift in our town between “safe” and “not safe.” It marked the end of impregnable America and began an age of vulnerability. It marked the end of “we are protected” and the beginning of something else.

When you ask New Yorkers now what they remember, they start with something big—the first news report, the phone call in which someone said, “Turn on the TV.” But then they go to the kind of small thing that when you first saw it you had no idea it would stay in your mind forever. The look on the face of a young Asian woman on Sixth Avenue in the 20s, as she looked upward. The votive candles on the street and the spontaneous shrines that popped up, the pictures of saints. The Xeroxed signs that covered every street pole downtown. A man or a woman in a family picture from a wedding or a birthday or bar mitzvah. “Have you seen Carla? Last seen Tuesday morning in Windows on the World.”

The bus driver as I fumbled in my wallet to find my transit card. “Free rides today,” he mumbled, in a voice on autopilot. The Pompeii-like ash that left a film on everything in town, all the way to the Bronx. The smell of burning plastic that lingered for weeks. A man who worked at Ground Zero told me: “It’s the computers.” They didn’t melt or decompose, and they wouldn’t stop burning. The doctors and nurses who lined up outside St. Vincent’s Hospital with gurneys, thinking thousands would come, and the shock when they didn’t. The spontaneous Dunkirk-like fleet of ferries that took survivors to New Jersey.

The old woman with her grandchild in a stroller. On the stroller she had written a sign in magic marker: “America You Are Not Alone, Mexico Is With You.” She was all by herself in the darkness, on the side of the West Side Highway, as we stood to cheer the workers who were barreling downtown in trucks to begin the dig-out, and to see if they could find someone still alive.

The notes neighbors left under each other’s doors. “Are you OK? Haven’t seen you and just thought I’d make sure all is all right.” The flags in every bodega, on every storefront, in the windows of apartments, up and down the proud facades of Park Avenue. My beautiful cynical town covered in flags, swept by love and protectiveness toward our country.

At first we didn’t know what to call it, so we called it what happened. “Do you believe what happened?” “They think he died in what happened.” It was weeks before we called it 9/11. Sometimes tragedy takes time to find a name.

We were half crazy those days. We were half nuts and didn’t know it. The trauma on Tuesday was followed in the middle of Thursday night by a storm, a howling banshee that shook buildings—thunder like a cannonade, lightning tearing through the sky. And then there were the stories. We kept hearing about guys who dug themselves out of the rubble. We’d hear a guy came out of the rubble and said, “There’s 20 firemen down there in an air pocket,” and we’d all put on the news and it was never true. I will never forget this one: As the first tower went down some guy on the 50th floor grabbed a steel girder that was flying by, and he held on for dear life and it landed on a pile of rubble 30 floors below and he got up, brushed himself off, and walked away. That wasn’t true either. The stories whipped through the town like the wind, and people grabbed onto them.

And there were the firemen. They were the heart of it all, the guys who went up the stairs with 50 to 75 pounds of gear and tools on their back. The other people who were there in the towers, they were innocent victims, they went to work that morning and wound up in the middle of a disaster. But the firemen saw the disaster before they went into it, they knew what they were getting into, they made a decision. And a lot of them were scared, you can see it on their faces on the pictures people took in the stairwells. The firemen would be going up one side of the stairs, and the fleeing workers would be going down on the other, right next to them, and they’d call out, “Good luck, son,” and, “Thank you, boys.”

They were tough men from Queens and Brooklyn and Staten Island, and they had families, wives and kids, and they went up those stairs. Captain Terry Hatton of Rescue 1 got as high as the 83rd floor. That’s the last time he was seen.

Three hundred forty-three firemen gave their lives that day. Three hundred forty-three! It was impossible, like everything else.

Many heartbreaking things happened after 9/11 and maybe the worst is that there’s no heroic statue to them, no big marking of what they were and what they gave, at the new World Trade Center memorial.

But New York will never get over what they did. They live in a lot of hearts.

They tell us to get over it, they say to move on, and they mean it well: We can’t bring an air of tragedy into the future. But I will never get over it. To get over it is to get over the guy who stayed behind on a high floor with his friend who was in a wheelchair. To get over it is to get over the woman by herself with the sign in the darkness: “America You Are Not Alone.” To get over it is to get over the guys who ran into the fire and not away from the fire.

You’ve got to be loyal to pain sometimes to be loyal to the glory that came out of it. source – Wall Street Journal/Written by Peggy Noonan

BLOOD LUST: Hamas Ghoulishly Parades The Dead Bodies Of The Jewish Babies They Murdered To The Cheers Of Palestinians Like In A Sporting Event

SHARE NOW THE END BEGINS:

Hamas released the bodies of four Israeli hostages Thursday morning, including the youngest captive in Gaza, who was taken when he was just 9 months old.

Hamas just did the entire world a favor, and you should honestly thank them for it. They accomplished in mere minutes what a hundred years of writing articles about them could not do. What is that, you ask? Hamas just showed the whole world that they are heartless, murderous animals who not only exterminate children, but make sport and spectacle out of displaying and parading their lifeless corpses. The second thing they showed you is that the “average, everyday Palestinian” loves the work that Hamas does, and is complicit in it with them.

And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man‘s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.” Genesis 16:12 (KJB)

When you study the short-lived history of the Nazis in Germany, one thing that stands out is how much they relished the killing that Hitler tasked them with doing. They didn’t just kills Jews in the concentration camps, they starved them, tortured them, and made mountains out of their possessions and body parts to show their utter contempt for human life, especially Jewish human life. Hamas is very much the Nazis of the 21st-century, and the “poor, misunderstood Palestinians” are actually the all-too willing participants in Hamas barbarism. So no, I do not stand with the Palestinians, I do not support Gaza, I stand with the Jews and Israel from right now all the way to the Second Advent of Jesus Christ. Where do you stand?

Hamas parades bodies of four Israelis, including toddlers Kfir and Ariel Bibas, in disturbing display alongside propagandist inscription

FROM THE NY POST: The heartbreaking exchange saw the terror group hand over the bodies of Kfir Bibas, along with his brother, Ariel, who was taken when he was just 4, their mother, Shiri, 33, and Oded Lifshitz, 84. The bodies of the Bibas family — whose kidnapping video became a symbol for the horrors of Oct. 7 — and Lifshitz are set to be transferred to Israel, where a funeral will be held for them.

The four coffins containing the victims were displayed on stage in front of a disturbing mural depicting a bloody Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — with fangs — standing over pictures of the Bibas family and Lifshiftz, alongside a propagandist inscription. Placed next to the coffins were two missiles with English text reading, “They were killed by USA bombs.”

“Agony. Pain. There are no words,” Israeli President Isaac Herzog wrote on X. “Our hearts — the hearts of an entire nation — lie in tatters.”

Armed Hamas terrorists and Palestinians had crowded the area in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis to watch the transfer of the victims. Each black coffin bore a photo of a victim and Netanyahu along with a propaganda message.

“Every home in Israel bows its head today. We bow our heads for the heavy loss of our four hostages,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement. “The four coffins of our loved ones oblige us more than ever to promise, to swear, that what happened on October 7 will never happen again.”

Four Hamas terrorists carried each victim over to a waiting Red Cross vehicle, where workers draped a white sheet over the coffins before placing them in the back. Shiri Bibas was the first, followed by her sons, Kfir and Ariel. Lifshitz was the last victim carried over to the trucks.

The exchange ended when the five Red Cross vehicles left the exchange area in Khan Younis just before 10 a.m. Thursday. The Israel Defense Forces confirmed to The Post that the bodies were handed over to IDF and Israeli Security Agency representatives in Gaza. READ MORE

We have devastating, breaking news to report. The terror group Hamas announced today that the youngest Israeli hostages in Gaza, 2 year old Kfir and 5 year old Ariel Bibas, along with their mother Shiri are dead. CBN’s Raj Nair is joined by Israeli activist Mark Halawa from Jerusalem.

CONFIRMED: Israel Defense Forces Said Thursday That Hamas Terror Leader And October 7 Mastermind Yahya Sinwar Was Taken Out In Targeted Strike In Gaza

Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was killed by the IDF in the Gaza Strip, sources close to the matter confirmed to The Jerusalem Post on Thursday.

The IDF is now saying that they did indeed get Yahya Sinwar after launching a targeted strike on Hamas activity in a building in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar is, or was, not only the last remaining leader of Hamas, but the “brains” behind the attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7th. This is a breaking story and will be updated as new information comes in. This is big news, really big news.

And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity.” Ecclesiastes 8:10 (KJB)

Iran must be looking at all this and thinking to themselves is it really worth it to maintain this perpetual animosity and hostility towards Israel and the Jews? The short answer is, no, it’s not. Hamas is all but liquidated now, Hezbollah is just about done, and Iran would fold like a house of cards in an actual war with Israel, and everyone knows it including Russia who had this “word of warning” for the Jewish state today. “We have repeatedly warned and continue to warn, to caution Israel against even hypothetically considering the possibility of a strike on Iranian nuclear facilities and nuclear infrastructure,” Ryabkov was quoted by TASS as saying. Wars and rumours of wars have been determined. That’s the memo.

Officials to JPost: Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar killed by IDF in Gaza Strip

FROM THE JERUSALEM POST: The IDF and Shin Bet (ISA) put out a joint statement on the possible assassination earlier Thursday. “Initial report – During IDF operations in the Gaza Strip, three terrorists were eliminated. The IDF and Shin Bet are checking the possibility that one of the terrorists was Yahya Sinwar. At this stage, the identity of the terrorists cannot be confirmed,” the IDF said.

“In the building where the terrorists were eliminated, there were no signs of the presence of hostages in the area. The forces that are operating in the area are continuing to operate with the required caution.” Sky News Arabia published a report shortly after, quoting a security official as saying that his death is confirmed.

One of the terrorists targeted in the IDF strike in Gaza was Hamas’s Khan Yunis division commander, who Army Radio reported on Thursday has been in close proximity to Sinwar since the start of the war. According to the Army Radio report, Israel’s confirmation of the division commander’s death is a significant sign that Sinwar was among those killed in the IDF strike.

“As of now, one of the multiple necessary assessments has been completed for absolute confirmation. Dental images have been submitted to the police forensics lab, and DNA testing is currently in progress.”

The IDF also believes that Sinwar stayed in the tunnel with the six slain hostages, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Eden Yerushalmi, Carmel Gat, Almog Sarusi, Alexander Lobanov, and Ori Danino, who were being held in Rafah. According to the IDF, after the hostages were executed, he started to move without other hostages as human shields.

Israel Police gave the following statement a few hours after the report: “In response to recent reports concerning the identification of Yahya Sinwar’s assassination, the Israel Police, IDF, and Shin Bet are actively working to establish a definitive identification.” READ MORE

Hezbollah Planning October 7th-Style Attack On Israel From Their Vast Tunnel Network And From Their Weapons Cache Storehouse Called ‘Missile City’

Hezbollah is ready to launch a huge attack on Israel after a decade of evil plotting and building a miles-long tunnel network and a missile city

We have been told for many weeks now that ‘an attack on Israel is imminent’, and yet each day comes and goes and so far no substantial attacks have come forth. Lots of little skirmishes but nothing close to what has been threatened. In the meantime, Israel continues to make very good progress in eliminating terror cells of both Hamas and Hezbollah. The declared death toll of Hezbollah fighters is now at 427, leading one to wonder what will it take for Hezbollah to declare war?

“Every place whereon the soles of your feet shall tread shall be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the river, the river Euphrates, even unto the uttermost sea shall your coast be.” Deuteronomy 11:24 (KJB)

The AhlulBayt News Agency said “Lebanon’s Hezbollah resistance movement has unveiled a sophisticated underground missile facility at the same time as addressing a strong warning to the Israeli regime. The movement revealed the “Imad 4” facility in a video released by its Military Media outlet on Friday. The facility features a convoluted tunnel network, missile launchpads, and blast doors opening outwards that could be used for launching the projectiles towards predetermined targets.” You can watch this new video by reading this article on our web site.

Hezbollah ready to launch huge October 7-style attack on Israel after 10 years of plotting & building miles of tunnels

FROM THE SUN US: Analysts monitoring years of military activity in southern Lebanon warned that October 7 could soon look “like a picnic” if and when the Lebanese terrorists unleash hell. Hezbollah’s tunnels are said to serve multiple purposes, including military operations, smuggling, and the storage of weapons.

A recent video posted by the terror group even revealed chilling snippets of hidden terror tunnel network from which missiles can be launched. But the exact extent and current state of the underground networks are still not fully known to the public despite the eerie previews.

Lieutenant Colonel Sarit Zehavi, a former Israeli Defence Force intelligence analyst who has been studying Hezbollah for decades, told The Sun: “The risk has never been greater.

“Hezbollah has ten times the firepower of Hamas, with a total military force of 50,000 and up to 5,000 elite troops ready to storm across the border.

“They have built miles of tunnels connecting their forces and more attack tunnels to storm into Israel. They are cut into solid rock and bigger than the Hamas tunnels — some big enough to drive a truck through — with electric power and even air conditioning. But the biggest threat is posed by the sheer volume of their weapons arsenal. They have more than 200,000 rockets, guided missiles and drones.”

Lieutenant Colonel Zehavi fears that Hezbollah may now have enough weapons to overwhelm the Iron Dome and David’s Sling air defences, which protect Israeli towns and cities.

“And once their attack starts, it could go on for months — at the same time as others from Iran, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and from Gaza and the West Bank inside Israel,” she said. “All this is pointed towards us — we are already in a fight for our very existence.” READ MORE
